Muaythai (Muay-thai)
Muaythai is a thousand year old art, developed on the battlefields of Thailand - now refined for the sports ring, yet still known as "The most brutal ring sport" in the world. Sometimes called Muay Thai Boxing or Thai Kickboxing; Muay Thai differs from Western-style boxing most noticeably in its allowing the use of elbows, knees, feet, and certain holds and throws. Because a Muay Thai fighter uses hands, elbows, feet, and knees, it is called "the science of the eight limbs"
Practicing Muay Thai is a vigorous workout and produces tremendous cardiovascular endurance.
It includes running, skipping, shadow-boxing, pad work and heavy bag work.
Muaythai has proven to be an excellent fitness, toning and weight control method with the added benefit of learning a genuine Martial art which is almost unsurpassed.
We have also incorporated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu into our classes.
Krav Maga
A very practical, effective form of unarmed combat created by the Israeli military. This form of "Specialist" training has gained world renowned for its practical, no-nonsense approach to hand to hand and unarmed combat. www.kravsa.co.za
Brazilian Ju-Jitsu
We have incorporated BJJ into all of our classes. Our grappling classes are being run by Jurgen Putter from Rio Grappling.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds also found in numerous other arts with or without ground fighting emphasis. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. BJJ permits a wide variety of techniques to take the fight to the ground after taking a grip. Once the opponent is on the ground, a number of maneuvers (and counter-maneuvers) are available to manipulate the opponent into a suitable position for the application of a submission technique.
Kickboxing (Kick-boxing)
Kick boxing is a martial Arts based Sport that incorporates the fundamental techniques of Karate, Western Boxing, French Savate, Tae Kwondo, Mauy Thai and whichever other art it can glean from.
Kick boxing is constantly evolving, improving and developing so that it never stagnates or clings to tradition rather than effectiveness. Kick boxing is a vibrant moving art that encourages self improvement and exploration rather than stagnant reiteration of techniques that may not be suitable for an individual. Once the student has learnt and mastered a basic technique he or she may, and is encouraged to adapt, modify and create methods of applying techniques that best suits him or herself.

Thai boxing The history of Muay Thai is interwoven with the history of the Thai people. A gentle, peace-loving people, for centuries Thais had to defend themselves and their land from aggressive powers. They developed a form of close, hand-to-hand combat best suited for the kind of rough-terrain battle they were fighting. Over time it became a rite of passage for Thai men to take up training in this martial art. King Naresuan the Great (1555-1605), one of the countrys most celebrated warrior-heroes, is believed to have been an excellent boxer himself, and it was he who made Muay Thai a required part of military training. Another milestone in the history of Muay Thai was the triumph of Nai Khanom Tom over 10 Burmese boxers in 1774. Taken captive after the Thai capital fell in 1767, Nai Khanom Tom was picked to fight before the Burmese king. After defeating ten of them in a row, he was freed and returned home a hero.
Muay Thai is the art of using human's toughest organics such as head, fists, elbows, knees and feet as weapons to hurt enemies. Some people said that Muay Thai is the one of many martial arts, which is the most powerful and deadly!. At preset time, as the was time has gone. Muay Thai has been developped as a kind of self-defense, fitness programmes and professional sports, which using gloves and fight within standard regulations. Muay Thai is well known not only for Thais, but also for everyone in the world. Men and women at any age can learn and practice Muay Thai for their recreation, sport or even in the real competition.

International Krav Maga Federation
Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israeli Defence Forces. It's also the preferred system for U.S. Military and law enforcement personnel. As well as many other agencys around the world. Krav Maga is not a traditional martial art. There No katas, no rituals. It is a self defence system. It is recognised as one of the best self defence systems in the world!
In recent times, Krav Maga has also been used in certain Movies and Films that needed a more realistic fighting style, as well as by various actors and actresses for their physical training, fight training and personal protection.
It is also very similar to the fight style - a mix of Krav Maga and Kali ideas - as used by Matt Damon in his Jason Bourne character in the Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum Movies. (Disarming pistols, dealing with multiple opponents, using common objects as improvised weapons and tactical fighting)
Jennifer Lopez plays a domestic violence victim in the movie "Enough", where she learns Krav Maga to defend herself & daughter in a desperate struggle for life.
In the game and book series "Splinter Cell" the main protagonist, CIA agent Sam Fisher, uses Krav Maga exclusively as his hand to hand combat system.
Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defence in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bear hugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. Just as important, we teach people to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter. Tested on the battlefield and in the streets, Krav Maga's practical approach to self defence will make you safer and more secure. Founded and formed by Imi Lichtenfeld (Sde-Or) and continues to advance and be modified the top instructors of IKMF.
Devised for Israeli freedom fighters by Imi Lichtenfeld, the style was later adopted by the Israeli army. Krav Maga's modified self-defence techniques are highly effective and can be used by people of all sizes and ages. Used by the Israeli intelligence and police forces, Krav Maga is the only unarmed "martial art" of this century to be tested and developed in wartime conditions.
The art of Krav Maga is much more of a survival system dealing with personal safety issues. It is a modern, highly refined, street fighting system, designed to be used against armed and unarmed attackers. As well as defences against multiple attackers and assailants armed with a firearms, edged weapons, or a blunt object.
The IKMF trains and educates civilian students and instructors (with KM and/or other martial arts background), law-enforcement officers and instructors, military personnel and instructors, as well as security and close protection officers and their instructors. All such individuals are accepted into the ranks of the IKMF.
Anyone can do Krav-Maga, young to old. You dont need to be a fit athlete to do Krav Maga. However you will get fit doing Krav Maga! Great for both woman and men alike, It enables you to protect yourself and to walk in peace.
WHO USES KRAV MAGA?
Krav Maga is used as the primary Defensive Tactics / Close Combat system by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the Israeli Police and Military Police and its Special Operations and Anti-Terrorist Units. The IDF including their Special Forces Units, Israeli Police, and Internal Security Branches currently use variations of this style on a day-to-day basis. Several European militaries have also adopted Krav Maga. Krav Maga is taught to Sky Marshals and commercial airline crews. Krav Maga is used worldwide in many security forces, and has become one of the most popular training options among civilians.
In the USA, personnel from various Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies and military units around the world have received mandatory training in Krav Maga, including the FBI, CIA, AFOSI Anti-terrorism Specialty Team, US Air Force (see photo to the right), United States Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration Arrest and Control Unit, U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, State Department, several divisions of the United States Coast Guard, and police and sheriff's offices in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, Alabama, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and California.
In addition to the Special Operations Forces of Israel (e.g. Sayeret Matkal, YAMAM, etc.), several special units from other countries have adopted this system for their hand-to-hand combat. These units include GIGN, Federal Police Special Units, FBI HRT, and SWAT, among others.
Our Classes start you off in a beginner orientation class where you will go through all your basic training for 3 months. Your first month you will learn the vital points on the body and all your stances, footwork and striking techniques.
From then on you will start going through all your defences against an attacker learning the basics on strikes, chokes, grabs, ground work and knife threat.
Once basic training is completed you move over to the Ongoing classes and your higher level techniques and defences. The objective of a Krav-Maga training program is to instruct the participants in practical self-defence techniques, fighting skills, defensive tactics and principles that can be readily utilized as the need rises. The key to the approach is to present a well integrated self-defence and fighting outline with relatively few specific techniques.
The system is designed so that the set of principles which are the fundaments of every technique apply to several potential attacks/scenarios. It is because of this approach that trainees reach a high level of proficiency, mentally and technically, in a relatively short time.
Krav-Maga is a modern method characterized by a logical and practical approach. It is an easy to perform, natural, and effective system featuring simple movements and "reflexive" behavior of the human body.
The ultimate goal is to keep the trainee safe from harm and to give him or her the ability, confidence and security to perform their duties effectively. A course curriculum is designed to prevent injury to the trainee and limit injury to a third party as well.
You have levels in Krav maga :
BJJ
Ju-Jitsu
Brazilian
Our main focus is stand up fighting(ie Muay Thai). But we have incoporated Brazilian Ju-jitsu into our classes now too. What better combination than Muay Thai and Brazilian Ju-jitsu?
So for those that are interested in entering into grappling tournaments or MMA tournaments they can do so.
Our BJJ classes are run by Jurgen Putter from Rio Grappling.
What is Grappling?
Grappling by definition, in martial arts, is any style or mix of styles that comprises techniques that rely on grabbing and controlling the opponent using body leverage as a way of achieving the supremacy through throws and take downs, pins and submissions, as oposed to striking martial arts that focus on knocking out and/or hurting the opponent.
Styles that can be qualified as grappling martial arts are Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sambo and Olympic Wrestling, among some others.
Some martial arts clubs train both striking and grappling, and in Mixed Martial Arts is fundamental to be a good grappler as well as a striker.
However, in the Rio Grappling Club schools, we are focused mainly in the grappling styles as we believe them to be more refined and less dangerous to ones health than the striking ones. As a matter of fact, one can train in a safer way if sparring on grappling, without coming back home with bruises, injuries and black eyes caused by intentional blows.
No martial art is totally free from accidental injuries, though, but grappling styles tend to minimize them by smart training and use of mats and other protection and prevention from excessive force during sparring.
Some striking styles avoid contact as a way to prevent injuries but this water down their effectiveness as martial arts.
Martial arts were designed in the past to prepare one for real combat, but nowadays this need is a lot smaller than in the past due to the evolution of our societies and the effectiveness of the weapons available as no martial art can turn someone bullet proof, so more and more the martial arts are becoming sports where combat is performed under a set of rules that can vary greatly from style to style.
A brief history on BJJ
Kickboxing
Kickboxing! The word itself speaks volumes about this fresh style of martial arts, which is no-nonsense and sleek style of decimating your enemy. It is a martial art which blends the grace of boxing with the powerful maneuvers of kicking styles. So boxing tips and techniques can come in handy here. A kick boxing workout routine is a great way of staying in shape and toughening up for life. Kickboxing is not just for martial arts experts. Any person can benefit from going for a kickboxing workout routine even if he does not intend to compete in actual kickboxing tournaments.
Kick boxing training strengthens the arms and legs, sculpting them to perfection. It is now widely popular as a strength workout routine among fitness enthusiasts. A kickboxing workout routine, based on intense aerobic moves can burn as much as 500 - 800 calories per hour. As an added benefit, it also prepares you for a real world combat situation and to defend yourself.
There are many advanced moves which require more skill, co-ordination and maneuvering. They are all mostly combination of all the basic kicking and punching moves. To learn these, you need to take some live training from a qualified kickboxing training instructor. Kickboxing workout plans can then be worked out depending on the moves you master, step by step. A punching bag is a good opponent to start with! It is an important part of kick boxing equipment. Being an expert kickboxer is working out strings of these basic moves to surprise, attack and pulverize your opponent. A kickboxing workout routine should be worked out with a qualified instructor who understands your level of preparation and developed capacity.
Our classes at Warrior Sports start you off in a 3 month orientation class for beginners, where you will be tought all your basic techniques. Your first month you will be tought your basic boxing and kicking techniques and combinations. From there on your next 2 months will focus on bag and padwork combinations, and start learning your parter work ie defences against the various punches and kicks etc.
Once you have completed your 3 months basic training you will grade and then move over to the intermediate class, where you will start learning higher level techniques.
The grading system runs from white belt up to black belt and we run 4 classes. Classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced.
And for those that wish to compete we have fighters training, where you can take part in club level, interclub, provincial, national and international tournaments.
We have incorporated Brazilian Jujisu into our classes.
Juniour Sport Karate
Having your child participate in the martial arts can be one of the best decisions in their development. Enrollment in a quality school with spirited instructors will improve not only their quality of life, but also give them a sense of internal peace and strong self confidence and discipline.
Parents struggle to find activities that will help their children build those important values that they themselves have been taught, often through hard work and responsibility. This is difficult today as so many restrictions are placed on parenting, even by people and organizations of people who do not have the experience of raising a child.
Martial arts is one of the greatest ways for children to learn all of the most important characteristics of positive role models, because it keeps the child's interest, and it is something the family can easily do together. It does all of this without convincing the child that he or she is required to win, no matter what the cost.
The martial arts actually help teach self-discipline and socialization skills. In fact, many parents whose children have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report great success with these programs because self-control and concentration are exactly the skills underdeveloped in ADHD kids.
After a warm-up, students practice the art's particular skills, which may include kicks, punches, and blocks. Each requires concentration and strict attention.
Progress is often marked by the belt system, which takes the beginner from a white belt through a variety of colors until black. Testing for each new level, generally every three months, is a good exercise in setting and achieving goals.
But, say experts, it's the respect kids learn, whether from bowing or standing still and waiting for the next command, that can be the most important benefit: It often carries over into school, helping to improve behavior and even grades, according to recent research.
At Warrior Sports, we are more interested in bringing the Junior Student the wonder of their own bodies than achievement in competitions.
CLASSES
We want the youngsters to enjoy the exercise and Martial Arts, to experience our classes as "fun" and "challenging" rather than "achievement" orientated. This does not mean that there is a lack of discipline - on the contrary our discipline is of a very high standard - but we refuse to pressurize children to perform unduly at a young age.
Our syllabus is loosely based on Shotokan Karate - but we lean towards the sport side of kickboxing rather than on the strict adherence to a traditional curriculum.
Kata
The youngsters are taught and are graded on the basic Shotokan Katas such as Heian Shodan, Nidan etc. as well as kickboxing techniques.
Weapons
Basic Nunchaku is taught to the children using foam covered nunchaku.
Sparring
The youngsters are encouraged to participate is light, controlled Kumite, Semi Contact and Continuous sparring once they have passed their Yellow Belt grade
COMPETITIONS
I have found that the easiest and fastest way for a youngster to lose interest in Karate is to have a bad experience at a competition.
We do offer small club and inter club tournaments for our children, those that want to go further with tournaments can take part in provincial, national as well as international tournamets.
Because we are a Mixed Martial Arts Academy, our youngsters are exposed to Kickboxing Semi Contact and light contact (continuous sparring) sparring as well as normal Kumite.
INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATION
Warrior Sports is affiliated with the World Traditional Karate and Kickboxing Association (WTKA), based in Viarregio, Italy.
We attend their world championships once a year, taking our most promising students so that they can be exposed to international standards, should they be interested in competitions.
LOCAL AFFILIATION
Warrior Sports is associated with the following:
Karate Academy of South Africa - Sensei Soon Pretorius.
KAGANO - the Karate association of Gauteng
A very nice article written about children and martial arts
Have you ever seen a bad kid? Have you ever seen a kid with low self-esteem? Have you ever seen a kid thats been bullied and pushed around so much that they think its normal for things to be that way and that its their fault? Let me tell you something when you teach youngsters (no matter what it is that you teach them) you see it all the time.
There are times when you have to build up the inner person as well as the outer. When you have to teach the kid how to handle the conflicts inside themselves, as well as the conflicts that they may face out on the street. You must teach them respect for others, by first teaching them to respect themselves. If you think that its easy and that you have a fool proof formula that works every time youre living in a dream world, and are too blind, or daft to realize it.
In some situations the martial arts can help with the problems. Notice the word some, not all. Theres nothing more gratifying in the world than to see someone who had walked into your dojo several weeks before who doesnt smile, or talk to the others in class start to interact with them. Or to see his grades start to rise, or even hear the parents remark on how his or her behavior has changed.
How does one accomplish these amazing feats? The first step is you have to care enough to sit and talk with your students and get involved with them. Your part in their lives doesnt begin and end when they walk into your dojo. Take ownership for the student. Request to see their progress reports. Make schoolwork part of their advancement requirements. If you do that though you had best be ready to clear out some cobwebs out of your head and lend the kid a hand if they need it. It helps if youve got some students that can help them out, and helps to develop bonds in the class.
That brings up the second point, if theres a problem you have to talk with the parents. This can be the most difficult part of the job. A word of warning when dealing with parents, diplomacy and self-restraint are the watchwords of the day. Constructive criticism in this situation should not be used. Rather say youve noticed certain behaviors ask their opinion on what should be done. Try and forge a synergic relationship with these people. After all two heads are better than one and they only want the best for their children, as do we all. Ill tell you now the parents can be part of the problem so tread with care.
Third you must show pride in their accomplishments. A word of encouragement can be fuel for success to those who so often run on empty. Yes, you have to correct mistakes that you see; but make more positive deposits in the emotional bank than negative withdrawals.
The fourth important factor is patience. Rome wasnt built in a day and these kids are not going to solve their problems overnight. It really is their job to solve them not yours. You just have to be there for them to offer support, insight if you have it or better yet, sit there with your mouth closed and just listen. Seek to understand before you attempt to be understood.
So what are the benefits you ask? For starters self-esteem and this can be a big one. How can you expect a person to be successes in life if they have never succeeded in anything else before? Success is a habit that is cultivated and nurtured not a God given right. Set goals and projects before them which are attainable and then help and encourage them until they succeed. Then help them to realize that they succeeded and that it was their accomplishment.
When you build the students selfesteem their sense of self worth grows. When they can see themselves for the unique and valuable individual that they are, then they can appreciate others for themselves. You must respect yourself before you can respect others.
The Martial Arts teaches other ways to express themselves than through violence. The arts teach when violence is acceptable and how to avoid conflict. Self-control is a hard commodity to come by but will stand them in good stead as they progress in life.
The arts teach self-discipline, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility. Quitting and casting blame on others is a whole lot easier than forging ahead against adversity and accepting responsibility for both the results of your own actions as well as the attainment of the goal. Its only through internal strength that we succeed in the task that is set for us either by ourselves, or others.
Karate was developed out of a sense of self-preservation to defend ones self from attack from others. However spears and swords arent the only dangers that face the martial artist of today. Self-doubt, feelings of worthlessness and the inability to deal with day-to-day conflicts in a productive manner pose as big a threat to the soul, as do weapons to the body. For so fares the soul so fares the body. If you can help one child to see the beauty in them and others, then you may look around and realize that things look a little better to you. There is no endeavor more worthy than the development and education of our future.
